Is The Library ‘The Most Fatal Room’ In Fiction?

If you grew up playing Clue, as I did, you know the thrill of being the first to figure out that Colonel Mustard did it in the library with the candlestick.

The crime novelist P.D. James has argued that book-lined rooms have an equally sinister role in novels. The library, she said, “is the most fatal room in British popular fiction.”

Was James right? I’m not sure, but I loved her quote, and I respond to it at @Medium:

  1. That is an interesting thought. Agatha Christie comes to mind along with several other contemporary cozy mysteries. And yet it’s one of my favorite places to visit for its peaceful and quiet. Quite a paradox to ponder.
