Coming soon to One-Minute Book Reviews …

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. More on this controversial bestseller that says you can get “anything you want” in life by using a secret “law of attraction.”

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House by Eric Hodgins. A fresh look at and reading group guide to a classic comic novel about a couple who square off against bankers, architects, contractors, angry neighbors and others when they try to build a home in the country.

Tourist Season by Enid Shomer. A review of a new collection of short stories about women who explore geographic locations from Florida to Tibet.

Books About Divorce and Remarriage. Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) recuperated from her divorce by flying to Bali and having so much sex with an island lover that she got a bladder infection. What if you can’t afford the plane ticket?

Are Publishers Pandering to Library Story Hours at the Expense of Parents and Others Who Read to Children? Books that exemplify a disheartening publishing trend toward putting the needs of schools and libraries ahead of the needs of children and their families.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. A review of the most talked-about young adult novel published so far this year.

Without Title by Geoffrey Hill. New poems by one of the best living poets. Are you smart enough to understand him?

And much more …

  1. Just this afternoon, I came across notes from a course I took from the Geoffrey Hill ten years ago. Frankly, I’m not sure I’m smart enough to understand my notes, but the class was extraordinary (he’s as pensively methodical about choosing his words while speaking as he is while writing). I’ll enjoy reading your review.

  2. Hello Janice,

A heads up, I’ll be closing my WordPress account as I’ve decided not to use it. I enjoy blogging at Blogger (provides access to template while giving me option of design, adding css, other, etc) and will be continuing my blogging there at

I’ll let you know when I’ve purchased and read the your two novels noted on your main website – I’m really looking forward to those.

I’ve listed you in my links list and will continue reading your site here on WordPress as well.

    Have a Great week.

  3. Mrs K: What a great experience Geoffrey Hill’s class must have been! His erudition is remarkable. The pub date of “Without Title” was supposed to be February, but it’s beem moved to April 30, so I’ll review it a little closer to the end of the month. I’d love to know anything more you can tell us about him then (and I’m sure others would, too) … Hill sometimes called “a poet’s poet.”
