A Great Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Gift for a Woman Who Likes ‘Chick Lit’

Looking for a great last-minute Valentine’s Day gift for a woman who likes — oh, accursed phrase! — “chick lit”? (As many critics have asked: Why don’t we call men’s novels “dick lit”?) Pick up The Big Love (Little, Brown/Back Bay, $12.95, paper), Sarah Dunn’s charming novel about a 32-year-old Philadelphia newspaper columnist and sexual late-bloomer that ends optiminstically about the possibility of love. This book has no connection to the HBO series with a similar name.

You may also want to check the “Novels” category on One-Minute Book Reviews for comments on three comic novels that make good gifts for a woman who loved Bridget Jones’s Diary: Wendy Holden’s Bad Heir Day, Simply Divine, and Farm Fatale. Holden is Fielding’s only true peer among British female satirists who write light social comedies, and while the quality of her later work has fallen off, these three early books are as delicious and fizzy as a Kir Royale.

Just a reminder, men: Books are not a substitute for flowers on Valentine’s Day. Yes, it’s unfair that you have to give two gifts if one is a book. But that’s the way the world works today. So if you give any of these novels, you also need to pick up something on a stem. Any woman who visits this site is free to leave a comment that disagrees with this view. So if you don’t see those comments, you may safely assume that 100 percent of the known female world agrees with me on this one.
