* Explanation of cost of lost work: I expect review at least 20 books per month on this blog. Newspapers typically pay between $100 and $350 for a review, depending on such factors as the size of the paper and the length of the review. If I were to review 20 books per month for a newspaper at $100 per review, I would lose $2,000 by doing them instead for this blog. But reviewers can’t always get as many assignments as they would like, so I’ve listed a more conservative figure.
