Why We Need Bookstores / Quote of the Day From Scott Turow

Why do we need brick-and-mortar bookstores? Scott Turow, the novelist and president of the Authors Guild, gives an often neglected reason in this quote:

“Marketing studies consistently show that readers are far more adventurous in their choice of books when in a bookstore than when shopping online. In bookstores, readers are open to trying new genres and new authors: it’s by far the best way for new works to be discovered.”

  1. Had never thought of it this way, but it does make sense! I do like that Amazon allows you the choice of used books that are much cheaper… If the big-box bookstores could incorporate that, they would be better off!

    • What an interesting idea: big-box stores incorporating used books! One large indie bookstore already does that, the Strand in Lower Manhattan. So there seems no reason why others couldn’t do it, too.

  2. I don’t agree. It’s true that in a book shop i’m surrounded by all sorts of books, and in an online environment i can only see the books i’ve selected, but also, paying on the internet doesn’t feel as real as paying with cash or card and watching it disappear, which lets me spend more adventurously online…
    what do you think?
