But that does not excuse them, because another writer and an editor were involved. At the very least, Clara’s War reflects lapses on the part of the editor who allowed the inconsistencies to stand.

Memoirists have given Americans much reason to be skeptical of books that describe events that occurred long ago in as much detail as this one does. Given the recent scandals here involving memoirs exposed as embellished or faked, publishers to make every effort to avoid raising flags for readers of the books they support. And the publishers of this one — both in the U.S. and the U.K. — don’t seem to me to have done that.

A reason for some of the inconsistencies could be the age of the woman. Though she did have her actual diary to help with many details I’m sure her memory of the events isn’t perfect. As for the lines about the wedding rings… perhaps she could have meant engagement ring? Most women in my family have two rings, a wedding band and a ring with a stone. Just a thought.

You’d think that editors would be hyper-vigilant about things like glaring inconsistencies after the sort of problems you’ve mentioned, but I don’t see it happening.
