Your reading habits are similar to mine. I always try to start with the first novel unless I am almost certain that a later one is better.

I appreciate your comment on all the cliches in Seton (disheartening as it is). In my experience they're a huge problem in historical novels. I want to find good ones to recommend, but so many are so bad ... If you have any suggestions, I'd love to have them.

Encouraged by this post I looked up both Phillipa Gregory and Anya Seton in my library's catalog. When I start reading an author new to me I try to start with their oldest book, having been burned too many times by sequels not named as such. So I got Seton's "My Theodosia", which happily came in an audio version.

Bah! Not only verbal cliches, but cliched thoughts. Her skin is white as (guess what). The boy has a devilish grin, the French girl uses French for common expressions, Mr. Burr is steely but courteous...Worst of all, though, is that she steals from Jane Austen! Unfortunately, without the book in hand I can't quote the precise phrases but I heard at least three in the first hour, which was all I could take.
