		<description><![CDATA[Good question. It&#039;s hard to answer become some Pulitzer winners, like &lt;em&gt;The Stories of John Cheever,&lt;/em&gt; have become masterpieces of American literature, and all winners won&#039;t come up to that standard, though I&#039;d love it if they did.

One issue is that the panel of judges changes annually, so the standards vary a lot from one year to the next. You&#039;d like all Pulitzer winners to come up to a certain level, and they generally do in the reporting categories. But that is much less true of books.  Sometimes you see more consistency in the National Book Critics Circle Awards (the judges for which have two-year terms and sometimes much longer if they are reelected).

I&#039;m also hoping to review one of the finalists for the Pulitzer for fiction, Christine Schutt&#039;s &lt;em&gt;All Souls&lt;/em&gt;, and may have more to say in that review if I can fit it in.
