You're very welcome. Based on the reviews I've read, even some of Diaz's most ardent fans admit that this isn't a flawless book. (One critic said it has a violent ending that comes out of nowhere, though I didn't get that far.) With book awards, so much depends on context. And recent American literary fiction hasn't been especially strong. So "Oscar Wao" may well been the best novel the Pulitzer judges read.

Thanks so much for mentioning "Alma." Because of Diaz's awards, I'm sure many book clubs will consider this book. And some may want to read that story before making a decision.

Thank you for posting this. I was curious about "Oscar Wao" and considered buying it, but after reading "Alma," a short story of Diaz's in The New Yorker, I was utterly baffled by his acclaim. It's just not for me, and it's nice to know I'm not alone.
