Misused apostrophes are plague, aren't they?

The problem seems to start with poor or no grammar instruction in middle school and beyond. Like most people who've taught college writing classes, I've seen student papers with lines like, "The English Department doesn't need it's remedial grammar program."

The thing that drives me right out of my mind is the mis-use of apostrophes. There used to be a huge billboard where I lived that said "ABC VACUUM'S. WE HAVE THE BEST DEALS." Try reading consumer packaging--you'll find numerous mistakes in grammar, punctuation, spelling...it's unreal.

I have actually taken a Sharpie and corrected signs hanging on shop doors. It's a disease, but I can't stand to see a sign that says: PLEASE COME BACK. STORE REOPEN'S AT 1PM.
