From my perspective this results partly from a simple lack of information about their lives — so often we don’t know the clergy apart from their roles. I would say Mother Barbara’s greatest gift in her book is simply being brave enough to show her humanity. Far too many priests are unwilling to do the same, which only leads to the idolized/romanticized view that laity have created around their church leaders.
