Back in the 1990s, when I was the book editor of The Plain Dealer, I started getting books on the theme I call “death as a growth experience.” The idea was that you can (and, by implication, should) keep “growing” until the end.

My idea of “death with dignity” includes freedom from the pressure to keep having to “grow” — as mental-health experts define it — until your last breath. Thanks for your comment. Jan

The best Holocaust books were very much on my mind when I wrote this, and I hope to do a separate post about them. Gerda Lerner’s great Auschwitz memoir “All But My Life” deals so beautifully with issues such as: How do you maintain a sense of self and hope for the future in such desperate situations? Thanks for the reminder of value these books can have.

I recently read and reviewed “Man’s search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. He says is possible to find meaning in most desperate and hopeless circumstances. He writes about his experiences in a Nazi Concentration camp.

While I agree it is not possible to find a bright side to every situation, it is worth trying. It makes life much bearable.
