One holiday season when I was the book editor of The Plain Dealer, the big news was a picture book of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings that cost $100. It was said to be the first $100 coffee-table book. You couldn’t even count the number of $100 volumes that have appeared since then. Sometimes when I look at the price on books, I think, “That must be in Canadian dollars.”

Flowers, wine, cards, and candy are fine. But books, I think not, for that’s where we’re the most likely to max out the credit cards. We prefer being tempted by other pleasures that are, by and large, less costly.
