Grandmas Trick-or-Treat. By Emily Arnold McCully. Ages 4-8. Two grandmothers — one of whom wears a nearly indecent miniskirt — defy stereotypes when they thwart a bully’s efforts to spoil the Halloweeen fun in a book for children who are beginning to read on their own.

Just realized I never thanked you for this lovely comment. You’re right that it’s a lot of work to maintain this site. But it’s also fun, and comments like yours are among the reasons why. I just get a bit backed up when I need to do extra posts because of an unexpected development, such as the recent controvery over the 2007 Newbery Medal novel that had the word “scrotum” on the first pace.
